Fly, Hummingbird, Fly

5 x 5 inches, Oil on Gessoboard-  Click to Bid The painting above is my second attempt at painting a hummingbird for the Daily Paintworks weekly challenge.  The first is below.  There is so much that is different between the two paintings, even though they were both painted by me today and from the same photo source . So what happened to make them so different?  The top hummingbird is painted with colors I premixed all at once, before I began painting.  The hummingbird below was painted with the mix as you go method.   5 x 5 inches, Oil on Gessoboard  Click to Bid I like the second hummingbird painting better because it has more power in the brushwork and bold, fresh color.   I'm finding I like premixing colors before starting to paint because I can compare values right there and then.  But this does change my style as you can see. Which hummingbird do you like better?

Toes Crossed

"Toes Crossed" 5 x 5 inches, Oil on Board Sold This beautiful Hummingbird has his toes crossed for me...that's because I'm hoping for more days like yesterday and today.  Got the peas planted yesterday and God watered them in last night, while I slept.

Hummingbird in Amethyst

Hummingbird in Amethyst, 4 x 4 inches Oil on Board  Sold - Thank you It's been too long since I've been in the studio again.  But decided to paint a hummingbird to celebrate warmer weather.  Everyone loves purple and hummingbirds.  Tomorrow's temps are going to be in the 60's.  Might have to plant my peas.

Vera the Hummingbird

"Vera" 4 x 4 inch, Oil Painting of Female Hummingbird Buy on Etsy Here is another Hummingbird.  Vera is a little green for a female, but she's ok with that and is happy to be in the air, on her way to a sweet meal.

"Joey"

"Joey" 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Panel with Palette Knife S old, thank you Joey is really the second Hummingbird painted in this Fall 2013 Hummingbird Series.  I thought I was finished, but Joey said: "oh no you don't.  I need a little more work from you."  So I put him on a drying easel and told him to be patient, that we'd figure out what to do next together.  Joey wanted to be a star in the midst of bright light.   Today, together we accomplished that feat.

Wallace

"Wallace" 4 x 4 inches,  Oil on Panel Sold, thank you Another sweet little Hummingbird for my Fall, 2013 series.

Dwight

Dwight, 4 x 4 inch Oil painting of a Hummingbird Sold, thank you This little Hummer has a beer belly which he says is better than a muffin top.  Dwight is on his way to the nectar bar for happy-hour and he's not interested in any diet beverage.

Bad Hair Day

Bad Hair Day, 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Panel  Sold, Thank you I know Hummingbirds don't have bad hair days, but this kinda just happened and I decided to go with it.  Sometimes paintings take on a life of their own and this painting is a prime example of that theory.  Poor little guy.  He's just so cute!

Homer

Homer, 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Panel Sold, thank you! I decided that today I should paint a Hummingbird.  It was a tough and long labor, but Homer is the result.  Hummingbirds are such delicate creatures and tiny like a new baby.  Some Hummingbirds are iridescent and that is what I wanted to capture in this painting.

Is That A Hummer Overhead?

Is That A Hummer Overhead? - 6 x 6 inches, Oil on Gessoboard Sold - Thank you This painting is inspired by another flowerbed at Wool Works.  The Hummingbird is my idea.  I love Hummingbirds and I think many of you do also.  Knowing that these little creatures love flowers, I just had to add one to this painting.

Maxwell

Maxwell, 5 x 5 inches, Gessoboard Sold - Thank you I was trying to get the feather texture and iridescence of this Broad Billed Hummingbird.  So this piece is a combination of palette knife and thickly loaded brushes.

Watercolor Hummingbird l

Watercolor Hummingbird l, 2.5 x 3.5 inches Buy now on Etsy This is an ACEO or Artist Card Edition or Original.  In this case, original of a little lady Hummingbird.  I've painted this pose twice in oils.  I'm hoping to do a series of watercolor Hummingbirds.   On another note, got my Shingles immunization today.  A very easy shot to take, so to all those baby-boomers who have turned 60, GET IT.  I'm so glad I did. I also was blessed to remove the net off my strawberry patch to find that the plants are loaded with berries.  OK, they're still white, but maybe in a week.  I mulched the patch and put the net back on to keep my berries protected from bugs and critters.  After more than 8 days of rain, it was so-o-o good to be outside in the garden again.

Tah-Dah!

Tah-Dah! 6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board with Palette Knife I was going to give this special Hummingbird a first name, but the pose was just so about to take a bow.  I had to name it Tah-Dah!

Ruben

Ruben, 4 x 4 inch, Oil on Gesso Board with Palette Knife  Haven't been able to put the time in at the easel like I usually do so far this week.  Tomorrow will not be a full day either.  But I'm hoping to round out the week with a full day on Friday.  Ruben is peeking at you!

Melissa & Iris

Melissa & Iris, 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board with Palette Knife Sold, Thank you! Melissa and Iris is another Hummingbird painting.  Melissa is enjoying this budding Iris and I LOVE Iris.  I think it is the most beautiful flower.  Unfortunately for me, I don't grow any, but I know a place close by that does.  I plan on making a trip in the near future.

Stars & Stripe

Stars & Stripe, 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board with Palette Knife  Buy on Etsy  SOLD!  Thank you. Another day, another Hummingbird.  This Hummingbird looks like he's flying into a star burst, almost like fireworks.  We are about to start Memorial Day weekend.  I hope everyone remembers freedom isn't cheap and never take yours for granted.

Lisa

4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board with Palette Knife Sold - Thank you This little sweetheart was painted specifically for the Daily Paintworks Oklahoma Fundraiser.  Daily Paintworks sponsors fundraisers when a need like this emerges.  Please consider bidding.  100% of the price goes to the fund.  Lisa will be yours and you'll know that you helped persons in need.  That's a win-win.

Linda

"Linda", 4 x 4 inches, oil on board Buy on Etsy "Linda" is the kissing cousin of my former painting titled "Julie".  She's not as colorful but she's just as lovable.  Like me, she loves wildflowers and spring.  This female Hummingbird was painted with a palette knife and some brushwork for good measure.

Benson

Benson 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board SOLD!  Thank you. This cute little Hummingbird has been given the name Benson and he's painted doing what all Hummingbirds live for...drinking nectar from pretty flowers.  Instead of taking care of my pretty spring flowers, I decided to paint Benson.  I guess tomorrow I'll need to get out to my garden.  Every green thumb knows gardens don't take care of themselves.

Gordon

4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board Buy on Etsy Gordon is a bold Hummingbird because he wanted to be flying on an orange background.  I thought, no I can't do that, but he insisted, so I took out my artist licence.  He looks just peachy.
