Westfield Shack, 6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board Click here to Bid Yesterday, I took a few of my paintings to Portage Hill Gallery.   www.portagehillgallery.com On the way back, I snapped a few photos for future paintings.  This painting is the result of one of those photos.  

Beach Shack is 6 x 6 inches, oil on board Sold - Thank you A hot day today.  I'm NOT complaining, but thought it would be nice to paint an old shack by water.  Very happy to be doing better than yesterday.  Looks like what was making me sick was allergies.  So I've got all the windows closed, latched and the air conditioner on.  Oh yeah, the  studio air purifier is on HIGH.   

5 x 5 inches, oil on board Sold!  Thank you There is very little that's cooler than a tree house to a kid on summer vacation.  I've had the pleasure of hanging out in one or two as a kid.  Of course, outdoor doll houses are cool, but tree houses trump any  house, fort or hideout on the ground.  Maybe I can get Neill to build me one when he retires.

6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board This is another view from the New York State Thruway.  Pattersonville is a charming community with some unusual farm outbuildings.  The tall narrow structure really caught my eye.  I'm not sure if it was built to be a mill or silo, but it is unusual and the collection of the three buildings together makes for a very interesting painting.

5 x 5 inches, Oil on Board My granddaughter's visit for winter break is nearing the end and we are both sad.  She had to do some homework today and that was a good time for me to log in some studio time.  She hates to do homework (what kid does) so I set her up with cocoa, ice water, cookies and caramels.  This set of shacks are just off one of the main roads leading to Syracuse, NY 

http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/108089 6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board Another painting inspired by value studies.  The barns are in Ontario County.  On another note, my Mini-Schnauzer, Cooper has gotten into the habit of sitting on my lap while I paint.  It started because of my digital camera - he hates this camera.  I guess he is trying to exert his opinion and do his best to keep my hands off the camera.

5 x 5 inches, Oil on Board Today, when I started this painting, it was bright with snow and sunny outside.  A few hours later, its windy, dark and raining!  Almost direct opposites.   This shack is located in a village close to a restaurant that is a favorite in the community.  A small stream also flows by.  I originally painted it plein air about 5 years ago and after it dried, I scanned then printed a black and white copy to check the values.   On Saturday, I did a complete studio clean-out and found the old value study.  Decided to make a small painting from it taking a little more artist licence than I did back then.  

5 x 7 inches, Oil on Board As I write this, we are getting the snow that could be a major storm.  Only skiers like winter and I'm not a skier.  Sorry.  This is a painting of an older shack located on the more rural side of my neighborhood.  I love this shack and its inspired many paintings.  It'll probably inspire many more.  

Bid On This Painting 4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board I'm pretty sure I'll be doing a year-long series with painting "shacks". Of course this will include barns and assorted outbuildings.  On another note, yesterday I tried and tried to paint Punksutawney Phil because he was such a good boy this year not seeing his shadow.  But alas! all that work turned out to be a scraper.  Going to try again today.

4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board Bid Now No winds today, but stinging cold outside.  Cooper & Cookie still need to go for their potty walks and we all three bundle up.  We are also very thankful for our woodstove and get real close to it when we get back from our walks. Looking forward to Superbowl Sunday!

5 x 5 inches Oil on Board This piece was like labor.  I scraped it off several times and for you artist's out there, you know the pain of scraping hours worth of work because that last one or two brushstrokes just ruined the ENTIRE painting. I'm happy with this 3rd attempt.   I'm surrounded with about 4 acres of trees.  Anytime I want a reference for trees, I just look out the window.  With today's powerful wind, it was hard to look at the trees and not feel sorry for them.  While I was in labor with this painting, I went downstairs to to check on my bird feeders.  I happened to spy a cardinal hiding under a shrub, riding out one of the bigger gusts of wind.   Now it's the end of the workday, the last day of January, 2013.  The good news is there is still daylight.  Last month, it was dark at this time.  The bad news is we still have all of February and pretty much all of March left for the real cold winter weather.  Th...

I travel it more than a few times a year to visit family.  You really can't set up to paint, but quick sketching or photos can happen if you feel brave.

4 x 4 Inches, Oil on Board This week's Daily Paintworks Challenge is to paint using your non-dominant hand.  For me that is my left hand.  I was more than a little nervous that I would not be able to create anything.  So since I've decided to try my hand with this challenge, why not go even further and have it totally made up.  This entire painting is made up.  I had lots of fun!

4 x 4 inches, Oil on Board   Very glad to be at the beginning of a fresh New Year in the studio.  I'm pondering expanding my daily painting adventures by painting a shack a day.  I'll paint other subjects too.  Why shacks?  The answer is a few years ago, I was building a name as a plein air painter of barns and shacks.   Like everyone who makes the commitment to be a daily painter, I want to build skills and along the way, make a reputation for being really good at something,  So the combination of it being a brand new year and a recent pep-talk email I received, maybe I'll be launching "Shack-A-Day"

5 x 5 inches, Oil on Board Today's painting is inspired by an older pencil drawing sketchbook.  Although I don't remember the exact location, I do know it is in the county I live in which is Ontario, NY.  Because I was using a pencil sketch reference, I could take quite a bit of artist license with the palette...which is always enjoyable for me.

5 x 5 inches, Oil on Board Another red barn!  I'm going back to my favorite subject to paint...Barns.  I'm totally in love with barns.  As winter grows closer for tomorrow, for today, I'm painting Spring.

6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board This painting got accepted into the Randy Higbee 6 x 6 inch competition and art show.  The deadline was November 18 at midnight.  Naturally, I waited until the last minute.  But I kinda have an excuse as I've been ill pretty much all this week!  Bummer.   On the bright side, I'm feeling much better and look forward to getting some serious studio time this week.
